Fitness/Personal Trainer Certificate

The Fitness/Personal Trainer Certificate prepares students for entry-level roles as personal trainers or group fitness instructors. It provides foundational knowledge of human physiology and exercise adaptation, prepares students for nationally recognized certifications, and supports further study in Exercise Science and General Studies.

Program Information

The Fitness/Personal Trainer Certificate prepares students for a career in Personal Training and Group Fitness Instruction. Focuses on client consultations, fitness assessments, program design and implementation as well as business aspects and ethical and legal responsibilities in the fitness industry. Certification is through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the National Strength and Conditioning Association NSCA)

A grade of “C” or better must be earned in all courses in the Personal Trainer program.

Success in the program is defined by your ability to apply what you’ve learned in real-world scenarios. This program ensures that every student achieves the following core competencies:

  • Define the role of fitness professionals in the prevention and care of lifestyle related diseases.
  • Demonstrate fitness assessment techniques and their application to exercise and wellness program design and implementation.
  • Identify factors that affect fitness, exercise adherence, and lifestyle modification.
  • Define ethical and legal responsibilities in the fitness industry.
  • Define business aspects of personal training and fitness instruction.

Human Performance Lab

Housed in the newly renovated Linganore Hall, the Human Performance Lab is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advanced physiological assessment within the Health and Exercise Sciences program. Students utilize medical-grade technology—including metabolic carts and air displacement plethysmography—to evaluate aerobic capacity, body composition, and metabolic rates to optimize health and human performance.

Strength and Conditioning Lab

Located in the Athletics Building, the Strength and Conditioning Lab serves as the premier academic hub for the Health and Exercise Sciences Program. This facility provides students with hands-on experience in program design and elite training techniques using industry-standard equipment, including power racks, Olympic weights, and selectorized pulley systems.
