Exercise Science Area of Concentration within Health Sciences A.S.

This program prepares students for careers in health, fitness, exercise science, and kinesiology, as well as transfer to a four-year institution. It combines general education with Exercise Science coursework and prepares students for nationally recognized personal trainer certifications, supporting entry into the health and fitness industry.

Program Information

The Exercise Science Area of Concentration within Health Sciences A.S. prepares students to further their career goals in the Health, Fitness, Exercise Science, or Kinesiology fields. This program of study prepares students to transfer to a four-year institution. It requires completion of general education courses and selected Exercise Science courses. 

A grade of “C” or better must be earned in ENGL 101, CHEM or PHYS, BSCI 201, BSCI 202, and all Concentration Courses in the Exercise Science program.

Success in the program is defined by your ability to apply what you’ve learned in real-world scenarios. This program ensures that every student achieves the following core competencies:

  • Define the role of Exercise Science in the broader context of education both in the private and public sectors.
  • Apply the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent lifestyle related diseases that are prevalent in our society today.
  • Identify factors that affect fitness, exercise adherence, and lifestyle modification.
  • Apply the principles of fitness assessment and testing to program design and implementation.
  • Describe anatomy and physiology of the human body and adaptations to physical activity.

Human Performance Lab

Housed in the newly renovated Linganore Hall, the Human Performance Lab is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advanced physiological assessment within the Health and Exercise Sciences program. Students utilize medical-grade technology—including metabolic carts and air displacement plethysmography—to evaluate aerobic capacity, body composition, and metabolic rates to optimize health and human performance.

Strength and Conditioning Lab

Located in the Athletics Building, the Strength and Conditioning Lab serves as the premier academic hub for the Health and Exercise Sciences Program. This facility provides students with hands-on experience in program design and elite training techniques using industry-standard equipment, including power racks, Olympic weights, and selectorized pulley systems.
