This fall, Frederick Community College (FCC) welcomed its newest (and furriest) employee, bringing joy and comfort to students across campus! Diego (“Diggy”), a two-year-old golden retriever-black lab mix, joined the College as part of a pioneering facility dog program. This makes FCC the first community college in Maryland to establish such an initiative.
 
Diego is more than just a friendly face on campus—he is FCC’s new Wellness Ambassador, to help students feel supported, relaxed, and ready to succeed. He also encourages students to participate in wellness initiatives and events, fostering a positive and engaged campus community. This innovative program, designed to enhance student well-being and provide emotional support on campus, is being implemented in partnership with Canine Companions ®, a leading organization in the training of service and facility dogs.
 
Establishing a facility dog program was the idea of FCC Counselor Emily Gebhart, LCSW-C, CCTP, who envisioned this alternate way to enhance student well-being. The rigorous six-month application process involved not only a comprehensive written application but thorough vetting of Gebhart’s home and work environments, as well as an in-person interview to ensure the placement would be successful. Once approved, it took an additional year on a waitlist before Gebhart was invited to Team Training and partnered with Diego. Together, they have already started making a difference on campus.
 
As a facility dog, Diego does more than just offer cuddles. Unlike therapy dogs, which are pets that provide comfort, Diego has been expertly trained by the professionals at Canine Companions to work alongside Gebhart, supporting students. Diego has been trained with over 40 cue words and can complete tasks such as picking up items, opening doors, and providing deep pressure therapy to help ease stress.
 
“We are so excited to introduce Diego to the FCC community,” said Gebhart. “He’s already beloved by students, and he plays a huge role in promoting holistic well-being on campus.”
