Model African Union, 2023 Update

On February 23 – 26, four FCC students accompanied by FCC faculty and staff, traveled to Washington, DC in order to participate in the Model African Union, sponsored by Howard University.

The goal of the Model African Union is “to study the role, structure and activities of the African Union as well as the capabilities and constraints that shape the policies of member states toward the economic, social, and political-security issues facing African countries” (https://modelafricanunion.org/). Each participating university represents one or more Member State of the African Union. The model represents a long-standing tradition of experiential learning, running for 43 years under various names.

The model begins with an embassy visit to the country the university/college is representing. Frederick Community College students, faculty, and staff visited the Egyptian Embassy on Thursday, Feb 23.  Consul Mohammad Aboulwafa and Department Chair Abdel Rahman Raafat generously spent over two hours briefing students on questions FCC submitted earlier in February.

On Friday and Saturday, Feb 24 and 25, the committees met for deliberation of proposed resolutions. FCC students: Kira Anderson, Maïmouna Diouf, Louie Shapiro, Hisham Virk, and Mina Yanek all submitted resolutions that were considered within their individual committees.

On the final day of the conference, Sunday, Feb 26, the General Assembly met to pass final resolutions and recognize outstanding student delegates. FCC’s Hisham Virk was acknowledged by his peers receiving both the Eleazu Obinna Committee Leadership Award (for delegates that foster consensus and capture the essence of complex issues) and the Michelle Tooley Award (for the delegation that contributed most to the accomplishments of the Committee – in this instance the Peace and Security Committee). Congratulations to everyone who participated! A truly life changing experience for us all.
