The Maryland State Police recently graduated the 159th Trooper Class, the largest Maryland State Police Academy class in five years. Among the 48 new troopers, 30 also earned an Associate of Applied Science in Police Science from Frederick Community College (FCC) through a unique 23-year partnership that integrates college coursework into police academy training. To date, approximately 580 troopers have earned their Police Science degree from FCC. The graduation ceremony, which included remarks by Governor Wes Moore, celebrated the achievements of the new troopers, with several graduates maintaining an FCC GPA of 3.5 or higher, as well as special honors for exceptional academic performance.

Through the six-month residential academy in Sykesville, trooper candidates complete 27 weeks of intensive training, with evening college classes added to their rigorous schedule. FCC faculty provide a broader academic foundation that enhances readiness to serve Maryland’s diverse communities. Coursework includes subjects such as English, communication, math, forensic biology, stress management, and social problems.

“FCC is proud to support these graduates as they begin their careers in public service,” said Dr. Anne Davis, FCC Provost and Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Student Success. “Through our partnership with the Maryland State Police, we provide a strong academic foundation that complements their training and prepares them to serve with integrity, empathy, and professionalism.”

FCC’s partnership with the Maryland State Police reflects the College’s role as both an academic institution and a workforce partner dedicated to strengthening Maryland’s public safety pipeline. Through the College’s Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management & Public Safety (MACEM&PS), criminal justice programs, and continuing education offerings, FCC educates and trains thousands of individuals each year who are pursuing or advancing careers in policing, fire service, emergency management, and related fields.
