3 must-haves on your Handshake profile

Employers find you based on the career interests in your Handshake profile. Interests include:

  1. Job type: Do you want an internship, part-time job, or full-time job?

  2. Location: Which cities do you want to work in?

  3. Job roles: Select the types of jobs you want, like marketing associate or data analyst.

Fun Fact: 80% of students with these 3 must-haves will receive a DM from an employer.

Handshake Tips

Get to know your way around the Handshake app!

Log in as a student to show:
  • Homepage: Personalized recommendations from events to jobs.
  • Events: See all the events in the area, then filter.
  • Jobs: Explore jobs to get an idea of what you’re interested in, filter to find more specific opportunities, and check out reviews on the job page.
  • Employers: Use this to discover your short list of target employers. The more accurate your career interests are, the more specific your recommendations will become.
  • Profile: Update your profile! Peruse the “discover more students” section where you can see others on the network. You can filter just for students from your school as well.
  • Notifications preferences & adding additional emails: Select where and how often you want to receive notifications.

Sign up for a virtual info chat

Book an informal 15 minute one-on-one conversation with an employer to learn more about a specific role or company!

Tips:
  • Schedule a chat via the “Find the time” button
  • Make sure you’re dressed for the part
  • Have a list of prepared Q&A ready to make your application stand out

You may notice recruiters making themselves available to chat directly on job postings. Sign up for a time!

Attend an event

Browse upcoming sessions on the “Events” page or check out our recommendations for you on the Handshake homepage.

Tips:
  • Meet with employers at events to learn more about a role you’re interested in
  • Attend career fairs virtually or in-person
  • Check out events created by Career Services designed to help your job search

The best way to stand out to recruiters is to take time to learn more about their companies. Explore events that interest you and register to attend! Always follow up after meeting a potential employer with a brief and personalized thank you note.

Message an employer

Get the inside scoop on the job you want by messaging an employer first!

Tips:
  • Start off with a friendly opening
  • Tell them a little bit about yourself
  • Ask a few questions about the role and the company

You can search for employers who are open to messaging (this is a filter available in Job search) and either through their profile or directly on job postings you will see recruiters who are open to virtual info chats. Leverage this to learn more about their company, what it’s like to work there, and what they are looking for in candidates.
