Frederick Community College is now accepting applications for the Shields Music Scholarship Awards, which provide funding for music lessons to school-aged children and FCC students. 

The Shields Music Scholarship Awards allow students to take lessons in piano, woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, and voice taught by FCC Music Department faculty members. Lessons for fall 2021 will be offered in a hybrid modality, with a mixture of online and on-campus instruction. Individual instructors will discuss the options and provide lessons in a format that works best for each student. Spring semester instruction modalities will be determined at a later date.

“We are grateful to the George L. Shields Foundation for providing students of all ages in our community with the incredible gift of learning and improving their musical skills through these scholarships,” said Dr. Marjory Serrano, Shields program coordinator. “It’s amazing to see how much these students learn and grow during the year under the guidance of our talented music faculty.”
Scholarships for the 2021-2022 year are available in the following categories:

Merit: Children ages 8 through 18 who have experience with private music lessons
Application deadline: May 28, 2021
 
Continuing: Children ages 7 through 15 who have completed one year of musical instruction under the developing category at FCC
Application deadline: May 28, 2021
 
Developing: Children ages 6 through 14 who have not had experience with private music lessons
Application deadline: July 31, 2021
 
College students: Students entering FCC who are majoring in music
Application deadline: August 16, 2021
 
The awards have been offered annually since 2000 through the George L. Shields Foundation.
