FCC Holding President’s Investiture and Community Celebration
08/25/2015
Frederick Community College is inviting all community members to the Investiture of President Elizabeth Burmaster and Community Celebration on Sunday, August 30.

The free events will take place at FCC and are sponsored by the FCC Foundation, Inc.

The investiture – also commonly referred to as an inauguration - will begin at 1 p.m. in the JBK Theater. The ceremony will officially recognize President Burmaster as the 10th president of FCC.

The half-hour investiture will be followed by the Community Celebration and Open House on the quad between the Athletics Center and Linganore Hall. The afternoon will feature a tent with student demonstrations and displays, live music, and campus tours from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Music will be performed by the Dave Conrad Trio, Jukebox Live, and the Howard Burns Trio. Light refreshments will be served in the Athletics Center.

"This will be a great weekend for the College and we look forward to having community members join us on campus to help celebrate all that makes FCC special," said Myrna Whitworth, chair of the FCC Board of Trustees. “August 30 will be an important date in our College history, and we are excited to recognize President Burmaster at the Investiture ceremony.  She has accomplished much in her first year, and we know FCC has a bright future with her as its leader."

FCC is also hosting an Alumni Tailgate at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 29 at the Frederick Indoor Sports Center (FISC). The tailgate will feature the Ravens-Redskins preseason game on a large screen, activities for children, a cash bar for adults, and food stations. The free event, sponsored by FISC, is open to the public.

The college has grown significantly in its campus footprint and scope of programs in recent years, with more than 6,000 students taking credit classes each fall, and an equal number taking Continuing Education courses. In addition to the main campus, students take classes at the Monroe Center on Monroe Avenue in Frederick, and at the Mount Airy College Center for Health Care Education.

President Burmaster, who is a Frederick native, began as the president of FCC in August 2014. She previously served as the president of Nicolet College in Wisconsin. She has also served as the elected Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction and president of the national Council of Chief State School Officers. Earlier in her career, President Burmaster was a teacher and principal at all levels -- elementary, middle, and high school. She has also served on the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, the Wisconsin Technical College State Board, and the Governor’s Council on Workforce Development, as well as numerous national educational boards. She and her husband, John, have three adult children and three grandsons.
