FCC Accepting Applications for Program That Helps Parents Earn a Degree
04/28/2021
Frederick Community College is accepting applications for its Parents Lead program that provides financial assistance to parents who want to earn a degree.

Parents accepted into the program receive scholarships that can be used for childcare expenses while parents attend FCC classes, or for other costs associated with raising a child.

“I had some reservations about going back to college because of childcare costs and financial support,” Jane Ngu, a current FCC student in the Parents Lead program, said. “When I got to FCC, I realized that financial aid and other scholarships such as Parents' Lead greatly assisted me. Now that I am in the program, I get to meet other parents like me which gives me the courage to forge ahead. I would like to advise other parents to give it a try and see how helpful the Parents Lead program will be to them.”

In addition to financial assistance, the Parents Lead program provides specialized curriculum and advising services specifically geared toward supporting student parents’ success.

“We know it’s a challenge for parents to find the time to devote to their own dreams when they are raising a family,” said FCC President Elizabeth Burmaster. “By enrolling at FCC and working toward their degree, they are bettering themselves and setting their families up for the best possible future. We have been inspired by our Parents Lead students and look forward to welcoming more student parents to this outstanding program.”

The cohort-based program includes a combination of online and on-campus evening or day-time classes and can be completed in as few as five semesters. Additional financial aid is also available to assist eligible students at FCC with tuition and fees.

The program is designed primarily for students seeking an A.A. degree in general studies while also assisting those who wish to transfer into alternate degree and certificate programs.

The next cohort will begin in fall 2021. Space in the Parents Lead program is limited. To get started, parents need to complete a brief online application, which can be found by clicking here. For best consideration, parents should complete the application by July 1, 2021.

Parents Lead is supported by the FCC Foundation and was created in 2018. Since then, approximately 50 parents have enrolled in the program.
