Preparing for your Advising Appointment

Academic advising is available to all FCC students pursuing a degree or certificate program. Advisors have specialized knowledge of courses and programs and are the best source of information on how to complete your degree requirements. Students who plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university are especially encouraged to meet with an advisor regularly to make sure the courses you are taking at FCC will transfer to your intended 4-year college.

To get the most out of your advising appointment, here's our check-list to help you prepare for it:

  • Meet with your advisor at least once each semester, typically PRIOR to April registration for summer and fall, and PRIOR to November registration for J Term and spring. This guarantees the best selection of courses!
  • Review your My Planner online to see what requirements are "unsatisfied" and plan to focus on them during your appointment.
  • Ask questions about courses, class meeting times, transferability of courses, and drop/add dates.
  • Tell your advisor if you are struggling in classes, or if you don't understand how your grades affect your GPA and academic standing, or if you are considering exploring other majors.
  • Request your advisor to refer you to other campus staff and services if needed (tutoring, mentoring, counseling, student clubs and organizations).

Not sure who your advisor is? Check the Advisor Contact List . Your advisor is based on your major or your participation in a specific program (Office of Adult Services, Multicultural Support Services, or Services for Students with Disabilities).
