FCC’s Institute for Learning in Retirement Presents Program on U.S.-Cuba Relations
Dr. Wayne Smith, one of the nation’s top experts on Cuba, comes to Frederick on Friday, October 19, 2012 for a special presentation called “The Closest of Enemies: Cuba and the United States Since 1957.” This event, which is sponsored by Frederick Community College’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and is $79 with a Cuban-style lunch included. It is open to the community but advance registration is required by October 12.
Dr. Smith will explore the complex relationship between the U.S. and our communist neighbor. Participants will consider how U.S. policies such as the trade embargo impact both Americans and Cubans. Pivotal historical events in the two countries’ evolving relations, including the missile crisis, Bay of Pigs, Castro revolution and the Carter initiative, will also be discussed.
Dr. Smith is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D.C. and a member of the World Affairs Council and the Latin American Studies Association. He served for 25 years with the Department of State, which he left in 1982 because of fundamental disagreements with the Reagan Administration’s foreign policy. He holds a Ph.D. from George Washington University and is the author of numerous books and publications, including his well-known work “The Closest of Enemies: a Personal and Diplomatic Account of the Castro Years.”
