Honors College to Celebrate 30 Years; Accomplished Graduate to Speak at Sept. 14 Event

An accomplished Frederick Community College honors student and graduate who went on to get her doctorate, will be the guest speaker at a special event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of FCC's Honors College.

Jessica Cannon, who holds a doctorate from Rice University, will give a talk titled, “Antietam at 150: Memory and Meanings through Time,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in the Classroom Student Center (H Building). The event is free and open to the public.

With a desire to learn, an honors education, and a little push from your mentors, the sky is the limit. These are the cirumstances in which Dr. Cannon became an exemplary example of dedication and academic excellence.

After graduting from Brunswick High school, Jessica attended FCC and earned an associate degree in history from the Honors College in 2000. Jessica then transferred to Wake Forest University where she received her bachelor’s degree. She attended Rice University for her master’s and doctoral studies. Her dissertation focused on the social history of Maryland during the Civil War. Dr. Cannon is now an assistant professor of history at the University of Central Missouri.

Jessica has always had a passion for learning, especially when it comes to the Civil War and 19th century America, and has made many presentations and published several book reviews and articles on these subjects. Jessica was an active member of the Honors College during her time at FCC and was a student speaker at her graduation.

FCC Honors is a program designed for students who want more out of their college learning experience, including rigorous classes and activities outside the classroom. The Honors College currently has over 150 students, with more than 2,500 students having taken honors classes over the past 30 years.
