FCC’s Institute for Learning in Retirement Holding Open House

Frederick Community College’s Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR55+) will host its Spring 2016 Open House on Friday, Feb. 12 when guests can explore opportunities for lifelong learning, meet ILR instructors, and register for classes.

“ILR participants share a love of life and learning, and this open house is a great chance to hear more about the variety of exciting opportunities we offer,” said ILR Program Manager Sue Adams. “Whether you want to explore technology, local history, world cultures, health and fitness, or cultivate a new hobby, it’s likely we have a class that will help you discover something new and enjoyable.”

This term’s Mardi Gras themed event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the FCC Conference Center. The new spring course schedule will be presented at 10 a.m. The event is free and registration is not required.

ILR offers short, casual classes, field trips, and special events for the intellectual stimulation and personal enrichment of adults age 55 and older in Frederick County. Classes begin and end at varying times throughout the term. There are no tests, grades, or homework, and classes instead focus on opportunities for participants to explore something new or improve upon a current interest.

Some course offerings this spring include:
  • Exploring Watercolor Painting
  • African American History of Frederick County
  • Current Issues in the Middle East
  • Tai Chi for Balance and Well Being
  • Making the Most of Your Apple iPhone
  • Fall in Love with Shakespeare
  • Canalling Through History of the C and O Canal
  • Physics of the Impossible
