FCC’s ILR 55+ Fall Open House Set for September 12

The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR 55+) at Frederick Community College will hold an open house on Friday, Sept. 12 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the FCC Conference Center (E Building). Members of the community age 55 and up are invited to explore opportunities for lifelong learning, meet ILR instructors, register for classes, and enjoy light refreshments. The fall schedule of courses will be presented at 10 a.m.

ILR is a learning organization with over 2300 members who share the traits of intellectual curiosity, a variety of life experiences, and a desire to learn and grow. ILR offers short, casual classes, field trips and special events for adults age 55 plus. Classes begin and end at varying times throughout term. There are no tests, grades, or homework. ILR provides a shared learning experience among interesting people and extraordinary instructors.


Of the 88 courses offered in ILR this fall, 30 are new, including France and Spain and the American Revolution; TED Talks – A Changing World; Lessons from the World’s Major Religions; 100 Year Ago: The Causes of the Great War; Anglo Saxon Literature, Introduction to Medication; An Introduction to Chaucer; Signs of Our Times: Introduction to American Sign Language; Solving British and American Mystery Fiction; Just Shimmy - Beginning Belly Dance; Windows 8; the Apple iPhone 6; More Banned Questions of the Bible; and more.
 
Popular series courses such as the ILR Middle East studies program, Medically Curious, and the Social Networking series will also be offered as will the Tech Tutor program.
 
Learning on Location tours include Early American History in Maryland; Native American Life of the 18th Century and the Washingtons and Lees of Virginia’s Northern Neck.  Other course topics include digital photography, religion, philosophy, fitness, world cultures, social issues, art, science, computers and technology.
 
International travel is also popular in ILR. A tour is currently forming for travel to five countries in Europe on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. An informational meeting for the European tour will be held Friday, Sept. 5, 10:00 - 11:30 am, in the FCC Conference Center. Any interested persons age 55 plus are welcome to attend.
