Learning Technologies

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Office of Learning Technologies is to provide multiple, flexible, adaptable, innovative learning tools for faculty and students through the identification, testing, and adoption of appropriate current and emerging learning technologies, and the corresponding professional development, training, and support for their effective use.

Goals:

  1. To support faculty in maintaining current the technological tools, skills, and competencies needed in a dynamic learning environment that responds to students’ academic requirements.
  2. To be a catalyst for technological innovation in the learning environment at FCC, through the activities of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Objectives:

  1. Responsiveness:  To accelerate the rates of adoption and mastering of relevant new technologies for learning, to at least one new application each semester.
  2. Innovation:  To support the use of technology in innovative teaching and learning practices, so that at least 50% of faculty test and adopt one innovation each year.
  3. Adaptability:  To increase the use of existing learning technologies by adapting them to be effective in different delivery methods, particularly in interactive modality, in at least 10% of courses in a semester.
  4. State-of-the-Art Technology:  To work collaboratively with Informational Technology to assess, budget, specify, and acquire state-of-the-art technology to replace aging hardware and software according to the FCC Technology Replacement Plan.

Strategies:

  1. Faculty Technology Workshops:  At least three 6-hour series each semester, on current and emergent learning technologies.
  2. Technology Open Labs:  Two Open Labs each week during active academic terms.
  3. Online information and support:  E-mail bulletins of selected topics to specific discipline groups; support to faculty requests by e-mail; weekly postings for faculty in Communication Central, and in the CTL web site.
  4. Technical Briefs:  Short technical presentations to technical and support staff, and faculty on specific topics of current learning technologies and corresponding issues.
  5. One-on-One sessions:  Individual, dedicated support to faculty, by appointment.
  6. Special demonstrations:  Large-group open presentations to introduce new learning technologies and best practices in their use.
Targeted consultations with the CTO, IT staff, and Help Desk staff on particular technologies that directly impact learning and the use of technology by faculty.
