FREDERICK COMMUNITY COLLEGE
2014 COMMENCEMENT

Thursday May 22, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.

Students who anticipate completing the requirements for an associate's degree or certificate of accomplishment are required to apply for Graduation through your PeopleSoft account. After signing in to PeopleSoft, choose Student Center. In "Academics" click on the drop down for "Other Academics" and select apply for graduation. Students who wish to earn a letter of recognition should fill out the Letter of Recognition Graduation Application form.

 


LOCATION

 

Graduation will be held in the Field House (Building D) on Thursday May 22, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Any guest not seated in the Field House (Building D) by 5:55 p.m. will not be allowed in the gym and will be directed to watch the
ceremony from the JBK Theater (Building F).

  • There will be no rehearsal for students. Instructions will be given at check-in and graduates will be directed by ushers before and during the ceremony.
  • Guests who need special access to the Field House (Building D) can drive to the back of the building and enter the "cage" area. The doors will be open to allow easy access for wheelchairs, etc. Ushers will be available to direct you.
  • Allow plenty of time for travel and parking. Traffic will be very congested on Opossumtown Pike.

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS


 • To qualify as a candidate for a degree of associate of arts, sciences, teaching, applied sciences, or certificate, you must successfully complete a prescribed curriculum as approved by the College.

 • You must satisfy all financial obligations (tuition balances, parking tickets, library fines, etc.) prior to receiving your diploma. LOR recipients do not participate in the ceremony.

 • Students who have been awarded honor stoles, cords or medals may wear them as well. Gold tassels will be distributed at the check-in area of the Student Center (Building H) on the day of the ceremony.

 • Graduates who are members of Phi Theta Kappa should direct questions to the Center for Student Engagement at 301.624.2793.

 • Veterans/Reservist/National Guard and Active Duty Military graduates should contact Rachel Nachlas in the Veteran Services office(A109) to request the Military Cord.

 • Students in the Honors College have earned at least 12 credits in honors courses.

 • Degree recipients receive graduation honors based on their overall GPA as of May 1, 2014. Honors are as follows: 3.50 - 3.74 graduate with Honors, 3.75 and above graduate with High Honors. Certificate recipients with an overall GPA of 3.75 will graduate with distinction. Graduation honors listed in the commencement program are tentative and based on GPA as of May 1, 2014; designation of graduation honors will be calculated based on final GPA at time of conferral.

 • If you transfer credits from another college to fulfill requirements for graduation at FCC, you must have your transcript(s) on file in the Registration Center by March 30.

 • If you are a Federal Stafford Student Loan recipient and you are graduating, you must complete the required exit loan counseling at www.studentloans.gov. Follow the instructions for exit loan counseling. If you have questions regarding your loan history, contact the Financial Aid Office at 301.846.2480. Please note, your diploma will not be released until this exit counseling has been completed.


IMPORTANT DATES


 • Last day to apply for August Graduation - Thursday, 7/25/2013

 • Last day to apply for December Graduation- Friday, 10/25/2013

 • Last day to apply for January Graduation- Friday, 1/3/2014

 • Last day to apply for May Graduation- Friday, 4/4/2014

Diplomas are issued four times a year: August, December, January and May. Students who completed degree and certificate requirements in August or December 2013, or January 2014 or May 2014 are invited to participate in the graduation ceremony on Thursday May 22, 2014.


COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS


The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Graduating students check in at the Student Center (Building H) beginning at 3:30 p.m. but no later than 5:30 p.m. Any guest not seated in the Field House (Building D) by 5:55 p.m. will not be allowed in the gym and will be directed to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater (Building F).

 • Allow adequate time to arrive on campus and park. All campus lots are open for the commencement ceremony.

 • Students should wear dress or business casual attire under their gowns.

 • Please leave valuables (e.g., purses, cell phones) behind; they may not be carried during the ceremony.

 • Graduates may check-in as early as 3:30 p.m., but no later than 5:30 p.m.

 • Each student will receive a 3 x 5 name card containing the following information: Name, Degree or Certificate, and Program of Study.  • Please verify at check-in the correct pronunciation of your name.

 • Ushers will direct you to your designated location in the Field House (Building D).

 • You must be in line in the Field House (Building D) and ready to march by 5:45 p.m. Ushers will be available throughout the building to assist you during this time.

 • Faculty Marshals will escort each row of students to the platform to receive presentation diplomas.

 • Graduates who are members of Phi Theta Kappa should direct questions to the Center for Student Engagement at 301.624.2793. If you do not have a gold PTK stole by May 1, 2014, contact the Center of Student Engagement.

 • Veterans/Reservist/National Guard and Active Duty Military graduates should contact Rachel Nachlas in the Veteran Services office (A109) to request the Military Cord.

If you require disability-related accommodations, including a sign language interpreter, pleas e-mail your request no later than May 1, 2014.


GUESTS


 • Doors open at 5:00 p.m. for guest seating. Any guest not seated in the Field House (Building D) by 5:55 p.m. will not be allowed in the gym and will be directed to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater (Building F).

 • Strollers are not permitted in the gym and must be left at the designated area located inside the Field House.

 • Cell phones and pagers must be turned off during the ceremony.

 • The procession of graduates begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony lasts for approximately 75 minutes.

 • The ceremony will be streamed live to the JBK Theater (Building F) and on the FCC website. www.frederick.edu. Guests do not need a ticket to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater.

 • All guests (including children) attending Commencement need a ticket. Seats are not reserved.
 


CAP & GOWN


 • You must have a cap and gown to participate in the ceremony. There is no charge for caps and gowns.

 • Graduates may pick up their caps and gowns in the College Store (Bookstore, Building H) beginning May 1. Please have your student ID available.

 • Please verify the correct pronunciation of your name when you pick up your tickets and regalia or call Kara Bennett at 301-624-2726 before May 15.

 • Sample size gowns will be available to try on and ensure the proper fit.

 • Students should wear dress or business casual attire under their gowns.

 • Not participating in the ceremony? You may collect a free commemorative ticket and tassel.
 


TICKETS


 • You may pick up your tickets in the Bookstore beginning May 1. Please have your student ID available.

 • Due to limited seating in the Field House (Building D), graduates participating in Commencement will receive 4 tickets for guest seating.

 • If you are not participating in the ceremony, you may collect a free commemorative ticket and tassel.

 • All guests (including children) attending Commencement need a ticket. Extra tickets will not be available at the door. Seats are not reserved. Any guest not seated in the Field House (Building D) by 5:55 p.m. will not be allowed in the gym and will be directed to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater (Building F).

 • Guests do not need a ticket to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater (Building F).

 • Seating for guests with limited mobility is available at the back of the gym and along the designated areas of the first row of bleachers. Seating in this area is by special ticket only. We regret that we cannot seat entire parties in this section. Please consult the ushers for assistance in finding the special seating area prior to the ceremony.

 • If any of your guests require disability-related accommodations, including a sign language interpreter, please e-mail your request to graduation@frederick.edu or see a College Store (Bookstore) associate when you pick up your regalia.
 
FCC is not responsible for lost, stolen or destroyed tickets.


PARKING


All campus lots are open for the commencement ceremony. Parking lots fill quickly, so plan to arrive early. Guests who need special access to the Field House (Building D) can drive to the back of the Field House and enter the "cage" area. Ushers will be available to direct you.

DIPLOMAS


You do not have to attend the commencement ceremony to receive your diploma Diplomas for May graduates will be mailed to your home address in early July. August, January, and December graduates should have received their diplomas.


DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS


If you or any of your guests require disability-related accommodations, including a sign language interpreter, please e-mail your request to graduation@frederick.edu or see a College Store (Bookstore) associate when you pick up your regalia.
Seating for guests with limited mobility is available at the back of the gym and along the designated areas on the first row of bleachers. Seating in this area is by special ticket only. We regret that we cannot seat entire parties in this section. Please consult the ushers for assistance in finding the special seating area prior to the ceremony.


PHOTOGRAPHS


A professional photographer (Charles Studios) will take a photo as you receive your diploma on stage, and will mail a proof to you within a few days of the ceremony. For more information, visit http://grad.CharlesStudio.com/. You are under no obligation to purchase photos. Photography is allowed during the ceremony from individual seats. Individuals will not be permitted to stand in the aisles or at the side of the platform to photograph during the ceremony
 


RECEPTION


A reception follows immediately after the ceremony in the Cougar Grille. The reception will feature music and light hors d'oeuvres. Your family members and friends are invited to stay and celebrate your achievements with you. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted at the commencement ceremony or reception, according to the Frederick Community College Drug and Alcohol Policy.


ALTERNATIVE VIEWING OPTIONS


If children become restless, guests and children can watch the ceremony via video screen in the Field House (Building D), Room 126.

The ceremony will be streamed live to the JBK Theater (Building F) and on the FCC website, www.frederick.edu. JBK seating is the most comfortable for older guests or those with special accommodation needs. Guests do not need a ticket to watch the ceremony from the JBK Theater.
