Culinary Students at FCC

Are you a high school student interested in pursuing a career in culinary arts?

FCC is sponsoring a Culinary Arts Scholarship Competition this spring for high school juniors and seniors from all Frederick County public high schools.  One student from each high school may compete to demonstrate his or her cooking skills.

The first place prize is a $530 scholarship toward tuition for classes in FCC’s culinary arts program. The scholarship must be used within six months of the winning student’s high school graduation. The second place prize is a professional knife kit by Mercer Cutlery (valued at $180), and the third place prize is a gift certificate for John Wiley & Son’s Textbook (valued at $150).

Submissions are due by Wednesday, February 29, 2012. The competition will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at FCC’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute, 200 Monroe Avenue, Frederick, Md., 21701. The agenda for the competition includes a welcome continental breakfast and an awards luncheon ceremony for participants, their parents and their instructor.

Competitors will prepare a chicken dish with sauce (recipe provided) and two side dishes, one vegetable and one starch, without the use of a printed recipe. A variety of seasonal vegetables will be provided for each student. Competitors will be judged on their level of creativity and skill in preparing the side dishes.

Requirements are outlined in the competition guidelines (see link below). Each competitor’s final products will be evaluated for taste, correct seasonings, and a balance of favors. The entries must display a mastery of basic culinary skills and be appetizing, tastefully appealing to the eye and proportioned properly.
