As a historian and professor at FCC since 1996, I believe that History is the story of the human past.  Historical story telling has been passed on from generation to generation for millennia in all cultures.  It is a story that connects us to each other and to the world around us.  As such, good history includes multiple perspectives (e.g., gender, class, race, culture), allows individuals to explore their place in the story, and enables us to better understand our world today.

The Honors experience should provide students with opportunities to do the same thing in all fields of study.  Students can simultaneously hone their academic skills and learn about themselves, the connections they have with other people as well as
the physical environment.  We do this by pursuing academic excellence through active learning both inside and outside the classroom.  Scholarship, leadership, and service combine to transform students into global citizens who are prepared to meet the challenges beyond the next horizon.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, specializing in the civil rights movement, 20th century U.S. history, and women’s history.  I have participated in several Maryland history projects, co-edited Mid-Maryland: A Crossroads of History (2005), and regularly present at professional conferences.  Currently, I am preparing a book manuscript entitled “Vanguard of the Civil Rights Movement” for publication.
