Honors

Honors College

We believe that a student should be provided the opportunity to explore his or her potential. The resulting personal and academic growth frequently gives our students a competitive advantage when applying to four-year universities and colleges.

The Honors College at FCC is designed for students who want more out of their college learning experience. Small classes (10-15 students), close interaction with superb faculty, and academic activities (e.g., research projects, field trips, and guest speakers) inside and outside the classroom create such opportunities.

Honors classes are designated "H" after the course number and emphasize higher reading levels, critical thinking, group process skills, and unique research projects. Some courses are linked so that the same cohort of students is together in two classes that share blocks of time.

Your academic path is but the first of many choices you will make in your lifetime. To paraphrase poet Robert Frost, honors is "the road less traveled," but it is a journey worth taking.

Admission

Membership in the Honors College is by invitation. Students with high scores on AP exams, SAT/ACT, or FCC placement tests qualify. Applicants with strong academic records or faculty recommendations may qualify. Contact the Counseling Department at 301.846.2471 or the Honors Coordinator at 301.846.2535 to see if you are eligible.

Activities

Co-curricular learning activities are another special feature of the Honors College at FCC. Each year the Honors Advisory Board selects a theme for the upcoming academic year. Honors faculty integrate the theme and co-curricular activities (e.g., speakers, field trips) into their courses as appropriate. This allows students to explore a topic across multiple disciplines and enhance their learning. The theme for 2007-2008 is "The Human Condition." For more information about honors activities, contact the Honors Coordinator, Dr. Bruce Thompson, at 301.846.2535 or bthompson@frederick.edu.
