Student Government Speaks

Across the nation students are speaking out and taking action to promote more sustainable practices on campus and in their communities. Educational institutions are joining along in promoting activities that both educate students about the issues and allow them to serve their community in a way that enhances that educational process.

How Students Can Make A Statement
Student Government Association
Participating in student government activities gives you a voice in the campus community. Student leaders are needed to raise important issues and gain the experience they will need when they enter the larger community and professional life. On some campuses SGA has established special committees to address campus environmental and sustainability issues.
Service Learning
Students, staff, and faculty often share a vision of environmental responsibility. Service learning is a process that matches an academic requirement with a project-based service need. Students can earn academic credit and serve the environmental needs of their community at the same time. Student projects related to FCC academic programs can encompass a variety of interests such as the business of sustainability, use of information technology to present the message, environmental law, sustainability in food service, and green construction management practices.
Student Clubs
There are a number of clubs that a student can join at FCC. Participating in the organization of your choice give you an opportunity to network with others having similar interest, increase your knowledge on the subject of interest, get practical experience working on issues that will make a difference in your community.
Student Organization Projects
Your student club may not have a specific focus on sustainability issues, but it is possible that there is an interest that touches on some aspect of it. Project ideas include dining services, energy, environmental literacy, habitat restoration, management systems, purchasing, transportation, waste reduction and recycling, and water.
